Komarice Bestiary

site-specific installation
2025

Step carefully and listen closely, and wonders are waiting for you behind the trees, in the grass, under the ground. If you watch closely, you might even get as lucky as grandmother Kubátová and see a Pytlíkač!*

Komarice Bestiary is a site-specific installation, guiding you into the South Bohemian landscape repopulated with creatures that don’t exist (anymore). These animals are collaged from local legends, pets of the village , and extinct species that once stood exactly where you are now. On another level, it is a collection of more recent memories: all creatures are recycled from fabrics that belonged to the actual inhabitants of Komarice.

A new species goes extinct roughly once every hundred minutes.** (more or less the time this walk takes.) The playful, friendly creatures of Komarice Bestiary add a new layer to the landscape evoking long forgotten stories and reminding us that “the familiar human scale is always only one possibility among countless non-human others.”***
