Eszter Koncz is an interdisciplinary artist from Hungary currently starting her PhD at MOME, Budapest, researching multispecies storytelling through mapping local wool ecosystems. She works at the intersection of performing, fibre and fine arts with a methodology that might be summed up in the motto, ‘thinking through making’ (making as sympoiesis [Haraway]: “a becoming-with”, “a making together”).  Next to compound artistic research projects - often focusing on local flora, fauna & folklore - she does graphic design and makes clothes from upcycled materials.

Knitwear 


Knitting while walking, while talking, while reading, while daydreaming, while watching a movie, while watching the landscape pass by in the train’s window.  I've been knitting since I was a child: I learned from my mother, who learned from her mother, and so on. I live far from home now, still, my hands continue the well-known choreography: click, clack, click ~  knitting becomes a way to measure time, turn it into shapes. I try to encapsulate these stories into the objects I make: when you purchase an item, you'll receive a little booklet containing the journey from this object from the yarn to your hands.

PhD: Multispecies Storytelling through Mapping Wool


This artistic research investigates sheep wool, not as an industrial product, but as part of a complex, multispecies meshwork1. where human and nonhuman agents mutually inform and shape each other and the landscape in an ongoing process of the world’s becoming.2. Thinking through a practice-based research, this project aims to explore what artistic tools are available today to untangle, map, and express these tangents of interspecies relationships. Following the journey of wool from pasture to sweater, this research relies on an interdisciplinary approach combining crafts studies, contemporary posthumanist philosophies,
such as New Materialism, Object-Oriented Ontology (OOO), or Actor-Network Theory (ANT), as well as Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) of pastoralists, farmers, and craftsmen. Local  wool production has played a major role in forming  the cultural and geographical landscapes of Europe;
yet it is currently facing a devastating downfall. The aim of this research is not to find innovative solutions to the vast and complex problems of the  Hungarian wool industry, but to tell soft and tangled stories, in search of new narratives and approaches that can help us understand this beautiful but neglected material better.

Collecting, Devising, Making

Coming from a devised theatre background, I work within a certain methodology that might be summed up in the motto, ‘thinking through making’. Making as sympoiesis ( Haraway) “a becoming-with”, “a making together”. I understand my work as an ongoing engagement with the surroundings: always a collaboration, a dialogue between the human and nonhuman habitats of the landscape. 



Clothes etc.


 My mother, my grandmother, my 
great-grandmother, my uncle’s mother, my aunt. I find myself in possession of lots of bags of leftover fabrics, a
strange fortune, so close to my skin. My mom taught me to sew and knit, and the others provided me with the
materials. I’ve been making clothes for myself since I was about 15 years old.
